Do Water Softeners Really Work?
A properly installed ion-exchange softener can reduce scale-forming calcium and magnesium in treated water. It is not a cure-all for every water-quality concern.
What a conventional softener does
Resin beads exchange hardness minerals for sodium or potassium ions. The resin is periodically regenerated, so maintenance and correct installation matter.
What it can improve
People often notice less scale on fittings and less build-up in appliances. Cleaning may become easier, but results depend on incoming hardness and the system’s settings.
Questions to ask first
- Is the model independently tested?
- What maintenance and salt use should you expect?
- Which taps should remain unsoftened?
Compare treatment options before buying.
