GUIDE
What Is Hard Water?
Hard water contains naturally occurring calcium and magnesium. It is safe to drink, but it can leave limescale on taps, kettles, shower screens, and heating elements.
How hard water happens
Rainwater becomes harder as it passes through chalk and limestone. The minerals dissolve into the water supply, so hardness varies widely between UK regions.
Common signs at home
- White deposits around taps and shower fittings
- Scale inside kettles and coffee machines
- Soap that lathers less easily
- Dry-feeling skin or dull-looking hair
What you can do
Regular descaling helps with visible deposits. If scale is persistent across the whole home, compare treatment options rather than relying on one appliance or a single marketing claim.
