Electric vs non-electric water softeners

The useful comparison is control method, continuity, capacity, installation and ownership, not a slogan about electricity.

In brief

The useful comparison is control method, continuity, capacity, installation and ownership, not a slogan about electricity.

Electric single-cylinder systems

These commonly use electronic demand or timed controls. During regeneration, softened water may be unavailable depending on design and plumbing. They need a suitable electrical supply unless powered in another specified way.

Non-electric and twin-cylinder systems

Hydraulic controls use water flow rather than mains electricity. Twin cylinders can provide continuity while one cylinder regenerates, but cabinet size, salt format and purchase cost may differ.

Questions that expose the real difference

  • What usable capacity is available at my measured hardness?
  • How much salt and regeneration water is expected?
  • Is softened water available during regeneration?
  • What powers the control system?
  • Which parts and servicing are covered by the warranty?

Judge the complete specification and fitted proposal. Cylinder count or power source alone does not establish value.
