The short answer

Compare the fitted price and five years of salt, regeneration water and servicing. A low equipment price is not the same as a low installed cost. Use the example below to check your own quote.

What does a water softener cost in the UK?

There is no single price that fits every home. As one dated reference, Culligan Harvey's published product facts list basic installation packages starting from £1,195 including VAT, subject to survey and pipework complexity. Checked 7 October 2026. This is one supplier's advertised starting point, not a UK average or a recommendation.

Ask what the package includes: the exact softener, fitting kit, labour, drinking-water outlet and any filter or starter salt. Do not assume an advertised installation package covers your chosen model or every plumbing alteration. A written survey-based quote is the figure to budget against.

A worked five-year ownership example

The figures below are illustrative assumptions, not market averages or a supplier quote. Replace them with prices for your home.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Example budget for five years
ItemAssumptionFive-year cost
Equipment£1,000 once£1,000
Installation£300 once£300
Salt£90 per year£450
Regeneration water and wastewater£20 per year£100
Planned servicing£40 per year£200
Total£1,300 upfront + £150 each year£2,050

This example excludes electricity, repairs, financing and any separate drinking-water filter. Add those if relevant. A service allowance does not mean every softener needs an annual paid visit: check the instructions and warranty for the exact model.

£1,300Equipment and fitting
+ £750Five years at £150/year
= £2,050Total before excluded items
Illustrative five-year budget: upfront cost + recurring cost × years.

Use the ownership cost calculator. Enter £1,000 for equipment, £300 for installation, £150 for annual costs and 5 years to reproduce this example.

How to calculate salt, water and servicing costs

Salt: multiply the expected kilograms used in a year by the delivered price per kilogram. Compare the salt form required by the machine, delivery charges and storage space. For example, 120 kg at £0.75/kg costs £90; both figures here are assumptions.

Regeneration water: ask for litres per regeneration and expected regenerations per year at your hardness and usage. Multiply those figures, divide by 1,000 for cubic metres, then apply the relevant water and wastewater tariffs. For example, 20 litres × 200 regenerations is 4 m³; at an assumed combined £5/m³, that is £20. Use your own bill's tariff. On an unmetered bill, extra use may not change the charge in the same way.

Other costs: list any electricity, filter cartridges, service-plan fees and call-out charges separately. If a quote includes a filter, ask when its cartridges need replacing. Include the total repayments and fees when comparing a payment plan with a cash price.

Ask every supplier for the same written breakdown

  • Exact model, capacity and suitability for your measured hardness and household use.
  • Equipment price and whether VAT, delivery and fittings are included.
  • Installation labour, extra pipework, drain route, bypass and drinking-water provision.
  • Salt and regeneration-water assumptions, with the usage and hardness behind them.
  • Warranty cover, exclusions, servicing requirements and call-out charges.
  • Any filter cartridges, optional care plan and finance costs.

A cheaper quote may exclude work included in another. Ask the installer to explain the difference before deciding. The installation guide lists the checks to make during a survey.

Will a softener pay for itself?

Reduced cleaning can be valuable without producing a guaranteed saving on your bills. Start with what you actually spend on descaling and cleaning, then decide what fewer scale problems would be worth to you. Do not count every possible appliance repair as a saving or assume that an advertised energy-saving percentage applies to your home.

If your only complaint is a kettle that needs occasional descaling, compare that routine with the cost and maintenance of whole-home equipment. If scale affects several outlets and appliances, check whether a softener suits your household before requesting quotes.
