Water conditioner vs water softener

The key question is whether hardness minerals are removed, altered in behaviour under stated conditions, or left unchanged.

In brief

The key question is whether hardness minerals are removed, altered in behaviour under stated conditions, or left unchanged.

Ion-exchange softeners

These reduce measured calcium and magnesium hardness through ion exchange. Performance can be checked using hardness testing before and after treatment.

Conditioning devices

Conditioner is a broad commercial term used for several mechanisms. Some products claim to change crystallisation or reduce adhesion without removing hardness. The treated water may still measure as hard.

Ask for claim-specific evidence

  • What exact outcome is claimed?
  • Under which hardness, temperature, flow and plumbing conditions?
  • Was the product itself tested or only a general mechanism?
  • How should the homeowner verify performance?
  • Which outcomes are expressly not claimed?

Compare the claimed outcome with your problem. A device intended to reduce scale adhesion should not be evaluated as though it produced conventionally softened water.

Sources and further checks

Sources are provided for verification. Product specifications and local supply information can change, so check the current primary source before acting.
