A softener treats hardness. A filter targets the characteristics or substances specified for its media and design.
The central distinction
| Ion-exchange softener | Water filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary task | Reduce calcium and magnesium hardness | Reduce specified particles, tastes, odours or substances |
| Evidence to check | Capacity at local hardness and regeneration data | Media claim, test standard, capacity and flow |
| Routine input | Salt and regeneration water | Replacement cartridges or media |
When both may be discussed
A household can have separate hardness and drinking-water preferences. That does not mean every home needs two systems. Define each objective and where treatment is required before combining equipment.
Avoid category confusion
"Scale reduction," "conditioning," "filtration" and "softening" should not be treated as synonyms. Ask what changes in the water and how the result is measured.
